BITTER ORANGES: CAN WE EAT THEM?

The bitter orange, also known as “melangolo,” “wild orange,” or “Seville orange,” is an ancient hybrid between the pomelo and the mandarin. It is not commonly eaten raw in segments due to its sour taste, but it is still widely used in cooking and baking.

ORGANIC BITTER ORANGES: RECIPES AND TIPS ON HOW TO USE THEM

The bitter oranges from Azienda Scollo, being certified organic, can be used in their entirety:

  1. The peel, being edible, can be used in baking to make candied orange peels, to add a special touch to your sweet and savory recipes, or to prepare bitter digestifs or liqueurs
  2. The pulp is used to prepare delicious jams and marmalades, perfect to enjoy on toasted bread, with aged cheeses, or to fill traditional desserts that capture the authentic flavor of the Mediterranean. Here is the step-by-step recipe:

  3. A pharmaceutical and herbal use of bitter orange is linked to its essential oil, which offers a wide range of benefits: it stimulates appetite, has antiseptic, antifungal, repellent, calming, and energizing properties.
  4. Last but not least, it’s worth mentioning that the essence of orange blossom, extracted from the fresh flowers of the bitter orange tree and also known as “neroli“, is widely used in perfumery and aromatherapy for its refined fragrance and beneficial properties.
